Vacant Lots Farm Club
Vacant Lots Farm Club is a non-profit urban farm that helps Calgarians wellbeing, by growing food and flowers to share. We convert vacant lots into therapeutic growing spaces, through practical volunteer work. Our goal is to promote outdoor, nature based healing experiences.

Vacant lots around the city sit empty as they await future development. We see a better way. Activating vacant lots can improve community health, neighbourhood beautification, and biodiversity. The book, Healing Landscapes outlines the importance of these types of spaces, and states that "overwhelming research now links nature contact with positive mental and physical health and social outcomes. Healing landscapes provide the necessary nature contact. By combining new scientific evidence and ancient intuitive wisdom the potential of a healing landscape can be realised." (Gayle Souter-Brown Urban Health: Applying Therapeutic Landscape Design. Methods, Design Strategies and New Scientific Approaches).

Our farm plan includes areas like a sensory garden, wildflower meadows, perennial food shelterbelt, and production gardens. We will be offering school field trips, where every visit will be curated to suit your group and curriculum. For the 2024 season our founders, Jack and Diane, will lead these sessions. The field trip will highlight farm features and engage you in seasonal activities that provide an array of educational experiences. Outdoor experiences range from mindfulness training, nature appreciation, to environmental awareness and working in the garden.

Our farm is a place about cultivating positive change. It is not about how much food or flowers we grow, it is about how you feel when you are there. We want to encourage citizens of all ages to engage with urban landscapes in a new way. We want to showcase the abundance that can flourish in these landscapes and the healing that can take place.

Our core values of compassion, optimism, integrity and taking a 1000 year view, speaks to our belief that we can design a greener, more intentional future. We are looking for teachers, parents, students, community leaders, and ambitious citizens to join our club!

Come say hello to Jack and Diane at the Vacant Lots Farm Club booth! Or find out more at vacantlotsfarmclub.com

SmarterMarks
SmarterMarks is an open source web tool that helps teachers and students do more with online and paper assessments. SmarterMarks allows teachers to: Quickly create assessments including multiple choice, numeric response, and written response questions. Teachers can use their own questions, or share questions with colleagues using communities and an open question bank built from items contributed by other teachers, and backed by classroom statistics. Administer assessments on paper or online without having to duplicate work. For paper assessments, teachers can build custom response forms that can be printed and accurately scanned using the equipment already in schools. Easily interpret assessment results to highlight student understandings and pinpoint misconceptions, and to improve assessment items from year to year.

SmarterMarks helps students get more from assessments as well, allowing them to: Collect not just a single cumulative grade from each assessment, but also feedback for individual learning outcomes, helping them identify specific strengths and areas for growth. Keep feedback from online assessments in one place for easy reference as they progress through a course.
